1970s
And little bit of the 1960s
While man walked on the moon, I worked for a studio, Commercial Art Services in Sussex Street, Sydney, from 1969 until travelling by motorcycle to Perth and back in 1970.
History shows that I fast-footed my way back to Sydney, put a portfolio together, and started my new adventure on 27 July 1970. Right in the middle of a very, very cold Canberra winter.
I spent 8 productive years in The Australian News & Information Service working on many design projects promoting Australia to the world. That was the ANIBs role and the professional group of journalists, editors, photographers, film producers, and designers. Another 2 years were spent in government as I was seconded to the Department of the Interior to help set up the structure for the upcoming ACT Government Publications Unit.
During that time I worked nights and weekends freelancing for local businesses until I finally took the plunge — left the ANIB — and went from freelancer to full-time graphic design business in 1978.

70s-ad-shirt-ill
An illustration I created in the 70s for IF menswear store. It was used in The Canberra Times newspaper. A pen drawing — Rotring pens of various widths. All drawn at same size and reduced in a darkroom on a ‘process camera’ and then developed like a photograph. These were the days before computer scanning.
70s-ad-Great-holiday-ideas
ACT Tourist Bureau advertisement created in the 1970s. I created the illustration, sent that to The Canberra Times newspaper, they added the type setting. That was the only way we could produce artwork for newspapers until the 1980s. Very ‘rough’.

A press advertisement in The Canberra Times for Paul Cooper shop in Kingston shows handwriting that I was forced to create as typesetting was not delivered in time!
